FRESH 

At nat sun farm, We LOVE growing fresh food. 

We harvest our food fresh for you, usually the same day as pickup. This maximizes the live enzymes available to you when you eat it and prolongs the shelf life.

all of our produce is grown using organic practices, without synthetic fertilizers or pesticides.

We are working to become organic certified. In the meantime, we invite you out to the farm to see for yourself what real food looks like.

 

Sustainable

ONE of our main goals is to enrich the farm's soil and improve the ecosystem around us. we do this by:

  1. adding organic matter to our veggies, which improves the soil conditions for microbes and earthworms.

  2. Any food excess and spent plants are upcycled (NOT WASTED) into our compost pile or fed to the animals.

  3. The animals themselves take in nutrients from the pasture and the grass they eat, and then leave nutrient-rich manure behind them. This helps build the root systems on the Grasses and legumes, which allows more carbon to be sequestered from the atmosphere and into the soil.

  4. implementing an intensive grazing system for our pasture. This prevents the animals from overgrazing any one spot, so the plants have a chance to grow back. It also lowers their parasite load, which reduces and hopefully eliminates entirely the need for wormers.

  5. incorporating cover crops and occultation tarps to minimize any unplanted soil and eliminate erosion, preventing nutrients from getting into our water.

Spring

Ah, our favorite time of year. The weather is beautiful, and not too hot, and all of the plants are starting to grow and bloom. We are revitalized and excited to get back into the fields and are SO ready to eat a variety fresh vegetables again.

 

Produce available:

  • Greens- lettuces and baby asian greens like arugula, mizuna, tatsoi, and bok choi, swiss chard
  • Brassicas- broccoli, cabbage, and kale
  • Roots- beets, carrots, radishes, turnips, bunching onions
  • Fruit- strawberries!
  • Asparagus
  • Herbs (usually available year round): thyme, oregano, spearmint, sage

Summer

The summer is the traditional time for growing food around here. That's when all of the favorites are available. We also LOVE time of year because we are "off" from our regular job of teaching, and can spend all day out on the farm (when we aren't at the beach, that is).

  • Tomatoes
  • Summer Squash
  • Cucumbers
  • Peppers
  • Onions
  • Potatoes
  • Herbs- basil, dill, thyme, oregano, sage, mint

Fall/Winter

It's a common belief that fresh food can't be grown around here year round. That's just not true. Yes, we have challenges like snow and freezes that can prevent some plants from growing this time of year. However, we have strategically planted food that will survive in this weather. 

 

Produce available:

  • Greens- lettuces and asian greens like arugula, mizuna, tatsoi, bok choi
  • Brassicas- broccoli, cabbage, kale
  • Roots- beets, carrots, radishes, bunching onions
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Potatoes
  • Winter squash- butternut, acorn, spaghetti
  • Herbs (usually available year round): thyme, oregano, spearmint, sage
